U.S. President Donald Trump announced a plan to refine and sell between 30 and 50 million barrels of sanctioned Venezuelan oil, to be shipped directly to the United States.
The announcement follows a U.S. military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from his palace and his transfer by air to the United States. Maduro is currently being held in a New York prison pending formal drug-related charges.
In a post on social media, Trump said the plan would be implemented immediately under the supervision of Energy Secretary Chris Wright, adding that the oil would be refined and marketed through a special mechanism, according to Reuters.
