Turkish authorities launched wide-scale emergency operations to rescue hundreds of residents stranded in vehicles on major highways after a sudden snowstorm hit the northern provinces.
The storm partially paralyzed transportation networks, shutting schools and regional airports and suspending flights in several cities.
Officials urged the public to avoid travel except when essential, as rescue teams and the military work to reopen blocked roads and deliver aid to isolated communities, with forecasts warning of continued severe weather.
