U.S. authorities announced that two people were killed and eight others injured in an armed attack that took place on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Police said in a statement late Saturday that the suspect had been arrested and a wide-ranging investigation was underway to determine the circumstances of the incident.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the attack occurred during the exam period, triggering panic among students and university staff.

Authorities are still assessing the possible motives behind the attack.
