At least five people were killed when Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the central and mountainous regions of Vietnam on Thursday evening, according to state media.

The storm destroyed thousands of buildings and cut power to more than 1.2 million residents.

Strong winds and heavy rainfall caused extensive flooding across coastal provinces, prompting authorities to carry out mass evacuations and rescue operations in the hardest-hit areas.
