U.S. arrests Somali immigrants in Minneapolis as Trump cuts work-permit duration for refugees

U.S. authorities have detained several Somali immigrants in Minneapolis as part of a wider immigration crackdown, coinciding with a decision by President Donald Trump’s administration to shorten work permits for refugees and asylum seekers from five years to 18 months.

Federal officials said on Thursday that individuals of Somali origin were among those taken into custody in the Minneapolis operation in Minnesota, two days after Trump insulted migrants from the Horn of Africa nation and said he wanted them out of the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that the arrests in Minneapolis began on Monday.
