U.S. Capitol Police on Tuesday evening thwarted an attempted breach of the U.S. Congress building by an 18-year-old man carrying a rifle, a police official said.

Police official Michael Sullivan told reporters that the suspect parked his car near the Capitol, exited the vehicle and began running toward the building’s west side.

Officers apprehended him, Sullivan said, adding that he was wearing a protective vest and gloves and was carrying a loaded rifle and additional ammunition.

It was not immediately clear whether formal charges had been filed, and there were no reports of injuries.
