Reuters, citing flight tracking data and U.S. sources, reported that the United States has been conducting wide-ranging reconnaissance flights over parts of Nigeria since late November to gather intelligence.
The specific nature of the information being collected was not clear. The operations come after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened military action in Nigeria, accusing authorities of failing to “stop the violence against Christian communities.”
Tracking data shows that the aircraft, operated by a U.S. contractor, typically departs from Ghana’s capital, Accra, flies over Nigerian territory, and returns to Ghana.
