The United States on Wednesday eased oil restrictions on Cuba, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for “radical” change on the island, blaming its communist government for the country’s economic crisis.
Rubio warned that Washington would reimpose tighter limits on Cuba’s imports of Venezuelan oil if Havana violated the “spirit” of the recent U.S. decision to ease the embargo.
“If we find that the private sector is playing games and funneling it to the regime (…) those licenses will be revoked,” Rubio told reporters during a news conference in St. Kitts and Nevis, where he attended a Caribbean Community summit.
He added that “Cuba needs to change radically, because it is the only opportunity it has to improve the quality of life of its people and to stop losing 15% of its population since 2021.”
The Cuban government did not immediately respond to Rubio’s remarks.
