U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced on Monday the postponement of his planned visit to Israel, originally scheduled for June 22, citing rising regional tensions between Israel and Iran.
In a statement, Johnson said he and Israeli Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana had mutually agreed to delay the special parliamentary session where Johnson was expected to deliver an address. “Given the current complex situation between Iran and Israel, we have decided to postpone the Knesset session,” Johnson stated. “We look forward to rescheduling soon and extend our support to the people of Israel and the broader Middle East.”
Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, is a prominent pro-Israel voice in the U.S. Congress. The visit would have marked his first to Israel as Speaker of the House.
The announcement comes amid heightened hostilities between Tehran and Tel Aviv, fueling international concern over the potential for a broader regional conflict.
