U.S. Preparing to Evacuate Non-Essential Staff from Baghdad Embassy

The United States is preparing to order the departure of non-essential personnel from its embassy in Baghdad, following a breakdown in negotiations with Iran and growing concerns over regional instability, according to a report by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

Citing a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the report said the State Department is expected to issue the evacuation order due to the increasing risk of regional unrest. Another official added that the Pentagon is on standby to assist in any potential evacuation of U.S. personnel from the embassy.

Currently, only a limited number of staff are present at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, meaning the anticipated departure would not affect a large group.

Additionally, the State Department has authorized the voluntary departure of non-essential staff and their families from U.S. missions in Bahrain and Kuwait, offering them the option to leave those countries as a precautionary measure.
