The United States vetoed a draft resolution at the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and unrestricted humanitarian access to the besieged enclave.
The resolution received the support of 14 out of the 15 Council members but was blocked by Washington’s sole dissenting vote.
The move comes as the Israeli military presses ahead with a new plan aimed at expanding and cementing its occupation in Gaza. In recent weeks, Israeli forces have intensified strikes on residential towers and apartment buildings in Gaza City, a campaign seen as an attempt to force Palestinians to flee southward.
