The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Tuesday condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for threatening senior Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, who has been imprisoned since 2002, after posting a video from inside his prison cell.
In the footage, Ben-Gvir is seen standing with a prison guard as he addresses Barghouti, saying: “You will not defeat us. Anyone who kills women and children—we will erase him.” When Barghouti attempted to respond, Ben-Gvir interrupted, insisting: “This will be remembered throughout history.”
UN spokesperson Thameen Khaitan described the video as “unacceptable” and an “attack on Barghouti’s dignity,” warning that such behavior could encourage violence against Palestinian detainees and further rights violations in Israeli prisons.
Barghouti, born in 1959, is a prominent Fatah figure and enjoys wide popularity among Palestinians, often referred to by his supporters as the “Palestinian Mandela.” He is serving five life sentences after being convicted by Israel for his alleged role in attacks during the Second Intifada.
