The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed the re-election of Mohamed Takala as President of the High Council of State, urging all parties to respect democratic processes and maintain institutional unity.
In a statement released early Tuesday, the mission addressed recent tensions among council members following the contentious leadership vote. A first round held in August 2024 saw former president Khaled al-Mishri receive 69 votes to Takala’s 68, sparking controversy over the legality of one member’s vote.
A follow-up session held on Sunday resulted in Takala’s re-election, a move al-Mishri has rejected, claiming procedural irregularities. Al-Mishri previously headed the council from 2018 to 2022.
UNSMIL called on all stakeholders to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue and reiterated its commitment to supporting Libya’s political stability and democratic institutions.
