The UN Security Council will vote Thursday on a new draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and unimpeded humanitarian access to the besieged and devastated enclave, where Israel’s war has raged for nearly 23 months.
The proposal is backed by a majority of Council members seeking to address what rights groups describe as a “genocidal war” against Palestinians, despite repeated U.S. vetoes of similar initiatives.
Elected Council members began discussions on the text in late August, following the UN’s official declaration of famine in Gaza.
