UN Security Council to Vote Friday on Reimposing Sanctions on Iran Over Nuclear Program

The UN Security Council will vote on Friday on whether to reimpose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, after Germany, France and Britain triggered the “snapback” mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal, just days before the annual General Assembly.

The three European signatories invoked the clause in late August, citing Tehran’s failure to comply with its commitments. The mechanism allows the automatic reinstatement of UN sanctions lifted under the agreement, which the United States unilaterally abandoned in 2018, reimposing its own punitive measures on Iran.
