The UN Security Council is scheduled to vote Thursday on a draft resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for a final term until the end of 2026, paving the way for its withdrawal.
The vote, initially postponed several times, will be held under Panama’s presidency of the Council. Diplomats said the text underwent multiple revisions to avoid a potential U.S. veto.
According to the draft, the Council would extend UNIFIL’s mandate until December 31, 2026, with a gradual, safe, and organized drawdown beginning on that date, to be completed within one year.
