US authorities foiled a plot to carry out an attack in New Orleans after arresting a former US Marine as he traveled to the city, carrying weapons and a protective vest in his vehicle, according to court documents.

Micah James Ligon, 28, has been charged with making threats across multiple states.

Federal authorities said they had been monitoring Ligon due to his ties to an anti-capitalist and anti-government extremist group.
