The United States on Wednesday began imposing 50 percent tariffs on a range of Indian exports — double the previous rates — as President Donald Trump moves to penalize New Delhi for continuing to buy oil from Russia.
The measure is part of Washington’s efforts to pressure India to reduce its reliance on Russian crude, which the U.S. says remains a key source of funding for Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine.
According to U.S. officials, some sectors, including pharmaceuticals and semiconductor chips, will remain exempt from the new tariffs.
