US Senate ends longest government shutdown in the country’s history

The U.S. Senate voted Monday evening on a bill ending the longest government shutdown in the country’s history, after eight Democrats joined Republicans to secure a majority.

The bill passed 60-40 and extends federal government funding through the end of January.

The text will now go to the House of Representatives before being signed by President Donald Trump.

The agreement will reopen federal agencies that have been closed since early October.
