Venezuela began releasing a “large number” of political prisoners, including foreign nationals, on Thursday, a move the White House described as the result of pressure exerted by U.S. President Donald Trump following the ouster of former president Nicolás Maduro.
Jorge Rodríguez, head of Venezuela’s parliament, said the government had decided, “in order to promote peaceful coexistence,” to release a significant number of Venezuelan and foreign detainees. Speaking to reporters at parliament, he confirmed that the releases were ongoing, without specifying how many prisoners would be freed.
The White House, for its part, stated that the first major release of prisoners in Venezuela since Maduro’s removal was achieved thanks to what it called the administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign.
