The District of Columbia filed a lawsuit on Friday to block President Donald Trump’s decision to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control by appointing a federal official as its extraordinary commander.

Police Chief Pamela Smith warned that the move poses a threat to public order and undermines the chain of command.

The D.C. attorney general sought an urgent court order, calling the step illegal and warning it could cause operational chaos.
