Recently, Mexico has been experiencing an intense wave of violence triggered by the death of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). El Mencho was killed by Mexican security forces in a military operation in the state of Jalisco, marking one of the most significant blows against organized crime in the country in recent years. The operation represented a turning point in national security policy and demonstrated the Mexican armed forces’ ability to carry out complex missions against high-ranking drug traffickers.

However, the death of the CJNG leader was followed by violent retaliation by the cartel across several regions, resulting in road blockades, arson attacks, shootings, and clashes with security forces in nearly 20 states. Authorities deployed thousands of soldiers and members of the National Guard in an attempt to contain the violence, and measures such as school closures in affected areas were implemented. The situation caused panic in some cities and had a direct impact on tourism, with flight cancellations and alerts urging visitors to remain cautious.

Beyond the violence itself, the crisis also sparked a wave of misinformation on social media, with false reports intensifying the sense of chaos and creating additional challenges for authorities in combating the spread of misleading news. While the Mexican government states that normalcy is being restored and that the country remains safe, experts warn that the power vacuum within the cartel could lead to new internal conflicts and fragmentation of criminal groups, potentially prolonging instability.
