The United States, United Kingdom, and France have strongly condemned the decision by Yemen’s Houthi group (Ansar Allah) to issue new banknotes and coins in areas under their control, calling the move illegal and a direct threat to Yemen’s fragile economic stability.
In a joint statement released by the embassies of the three countries in Yemen, the governments said:
“We strongly condemn the Houthis’ illegal issuance of new banknotes and coins,”
adding that the step undermines ongoing efforts to stabilize the country’s financial and economic institutions.
The three nations warned that creating a parallel currency system would further deepen economic fragmentation, complicate humanitarian efforts, and increase hardship for millions of Yemenis already suffering under dire conditions.
They urged all parties to respect the role of the internationally recognized Central Bank of Yemen, and to work toward a unified monetary policy as part of broader peace and recovery efforts.
