5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southern China, Killing Two

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Guangxi in southern China on Monday, killing two people and causing the collapse of 13 buildings, according to state media.

China’s Xinhua News Agency reported that the quake hit the city of Liuzhou, adding that one person remained missing as of Monday morning.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV identified the victims as a married couple — a 63-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman — while search and rescue operations for the missing person continued.

Authorities also evacuated more than 7,000 residents from the affected area.

Videos aired by CCTV showed people fleeing high-rise buildings, piles of rubble, and heavily damaged homes.

Rescue workers were seen searching through the debris with trained dogs, while emergency teams used bulldozers to clear the wreckage.
