Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria on Saturday jointly called for an immediate halt to escalating tensions in Libya and urged all Libyan parties to proceed with holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.
The appeal came in a joint statement issued by the foreign ministries following a trilateral meeting in Cairo. The talks brought together Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty, Tunisia’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Ennifi, and Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf as part of the Tripartite Neighbouring Countries Mechanism on Libya.
According to the statement, the ministers convened to assess the latest developments in Libya and push forward a political resolution. They expressed deep concern over “dangerous developments” in the country, particularly the deteriorating security situation in the capital, Tripoli.
The ministers urged all Libyan factions to “exercise maximum restraint and halt all forms of escalation to ensure the safety of the Libyan people.” They also reaffirmed the importance of unifying Libyan institutions and moving toward a comprehensive political process through concurrent national elections.
As of now, no official response has been issued by Libyan parties regarding the outcomes of the Cairo meeting.
