Argentina’s Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a six-year prison sentence for former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and issued a lifetime ban on holding public office, following her conviction on corruption charges during her time in power. The ruling triggered a wave of protests in the capital, Buenos Aires.
The court stated that the verdicts handed down by the lower courts were “based on compelling evidence” against Fernández, who served as president from 2007 to 2015.
This decision bars Fernández from running in the upcoming legislative elections in Buenos Aires this fall, just days after she launched her campaign.
The court also requested that the Ministry of Security establish a detention facility for the 72-year-old former leader. However, her lawyer, Carlos, has submitted a request for her to serve the sentence under house arrest due to her age.
