Brazil Files WTO Complaint Over New U.S. Tariffs on Key Exports

Brazil has formally requested consultations with the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over newly imposed tariffs, which it described as a violation of international trade commitments.

In a statement released Thursday, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said the new U.S. tariffs, which took effect today, amount to 50% and target a wide range of Brazilian goods, including beef and coffee. However, the measures exclude several major exports such as orange juice, civil aircraft, oil, and fertilizers.

The ministry condemned the tariffs as incompatible with WTO rules and stated that Brazil will seek to resolve the issue through the organization’s dispute settlement mechanism.

“These unilateral measures contradict the principles of free trade and undermine the foundations of the multilateral trading system,” the statement read.
