Brazil’s Supreme Court will begin deliberations on Tuesday in a landmark trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro, 70, and seven of his former aides, in what is seen as one of the most consequential political trials in the country’s recent history, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
Between September 2 and 12, five justices — led by Judge Alexandre de Moraes — will hear the case against Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022 and has been politically aligned with former U.S. president Donald Trump.
According to prosecutors, Bolsonaro faces up to 40 years in prison on charges of “conspiring to remain in power through authoritarian means” despite the electoral victory of leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022.
The prosecution also revealed that the plot included plans to assassinate Lula before his inauguration, as well as to target Justice de Moraes himself.
