France: Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu Resigns, Macron Accepts His Resignation

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, who accepted it, just one day after announcing a new government aimed at ending the ongoing political crisis in France.

Lecornu’s resignation comes amid heightened political tensions, as his government faced strong opposition in the divided parliament. Several parties had signaled their intention to bring down the new cabinet, despite Lecornu’s efforts to build cross-party support.

President Macron had unveiled the new cabinet on Sunday, retaining several key ministers, including Bruno Le Maire, who moved from the Ministry of Economy to head the Ministry of Armed Forces, while Roland Lescure was appointed as the new Minister of Economy to oversee a challenging budget proposal. Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau remained in their positions.

The right-wing “Les Républicains” party had expressed reservations over the cabinet reshuffle, particularly regarding Bruno Le Maire’s appointment, further intensifying political divisions in Paris.
