erman Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to cut economic ties with Spain.
Speaking to German broadcaster ARD after meeting Trump at the White House, Merz said: “I made it very clear to him that you cannot make a separate agreement with Germany or a Europe-wide deal that excludes Spain. We are all in the same boat here.”
Trump had publicly criticised Madrid during the meeting, saying some European countries, including Spain, had behaved poorly during U.S. strikes on Iran.
He added that Spain had refused to allow the use of its military bases and warned the United States could halt trade with the country in response, according to the German news agency DPA.
There was no immediate comment from the Spanish government on Trump’s remarks.
