The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Wednesday that an oil tanker was struck by two projectiles off the coast of Qatar, causing a fire that was later extinguished, while the second projectile failed to detonate and remained in the engine room.
According to the UK authority, the incident occurred approximately 17 nautical miles north of Ras Laffan Industrial City. The tanker sustained visible damage, but no crew members were injured and no environmental impact was reported.
The source of the attack remains unknown, with investigations currently underway.
The incident comes amid rising regional tensions and increasing threats to maritime navigation in the Gulf, particularly as friction escalates between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.
On Tuesday, Kuwait also reported that one of its fully loaded oil tankers was targeted off the coast of Dubai, resulting in a fire, as multiple maritime security incidents have been recorded in Gulf waters in recent days.
