U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday that the United States will either reach a “good” agreement with Iran or deal with Tehran “another way,” as diplomatic efforts continue to resolve the three-month-long crisis.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Rubio said Washington would give diplomacy every possible chance before considering “alternatives,” after President Donald Trump said he had instructed negotiators not to rush into an agreement with Tehran.

Rubio added that “very strong” proposals are currently on the table, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz and holding “real, serious and time-bound” negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

He noted that a deal to end the conflict could happen “today,” saying the administration had expected possible positive developments during the past hours.

Regarding Israel, Rubio stressed that the country has the right to defend itself against attacks, adding that Israel has “every right to respond” if Hezbollah launches rockets toward it.

Rubio’s remarks come amid ongoing international efforts to contain regional tensions and secure an understanding between Washington and Tehran.
