DR Congo Reports 71 New Ebola Cases in 24 Hours Amid Rapid Spread Concerns

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has confirmed 71 new Ebola infections over the past 24 hours, warning of a rapid spread of the deadly disease among the population.

According to the Ministry of Health’s daily report, the total number of confirmed cases has risen to 452 since the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola was declared on May 15, 2026. Confirmed deaths now stand at 82.

Most cases remain concentrated in Ituri Province in northeastern Congo, a region facing weak healthcare infrastructure and ongoing security challenges.

Of the newly confirmed infections, 65 were recorded in Ituri and six in North Kivu Province, marking the highest daily increase since the start of the current outbreak, the country’s seventeenth Ebola outbreak on record.

Health authorities said the figures indicate rapid and sustained human-to-human transmission, while confirmed cases have also been detected in neighboring Uganda.
