Russian authorities said they intercepted 25 drones overnight near St. Petersburg as the city hosted a major international economic forum.
Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko stated that air defense systems shot down the drones over the region, adding that combat operations continued during the response.
The attacks coincided with the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, during which Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted an oil facility and a nearby military site.
Russian officials also reported that eight additional Ukrainian drones heading toward Moscow were intercepted early Saturday.
The incidents come amid an escalation in cross-border attacks, with Ukraine increasing drone operations against targets inside Russia and Russian-controlled territories.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities said separate Russian attacks in the southern Kherson region killed five people on Friday.
