South Korea has proposed holding military talks with North Korea in an effort to ease tensions along the border separating the two countries.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korean Vice Defense Minister Kim Hong-cheol said Seoul had formally submitted the proposal to officials in Pyongyang.
The proposed talks aim to verify the location of the Military Demarcation Line, restore communication channels between the two countries’ armed forces, and discuss measures to prevent accidental military clashes.
The official also indicated that a trilateral meeting involving the United Nations Command, based in South Korea, could be arranged if necessary.
The proposal comes amid disagreements over responsibility for a landmine explosion that injured three South Korean soldiers last September.
