Brazil Weighs Retaliatory Measures Over Trump’s Additional Tariffs on Its Goods

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has instructed his government to assess whether additional U.S. tariffs of 50 percent on Brazilian goods, imposed by former President Donald Trump, warrant retaliatory action from Latin America’s largest economy, government sources said Thursday.

According to the sources, cited by Agence France-Presse, Lula has given the Ministry of Trade and Industry 30 days to determine whether the tariffs comply with Brazil’s recently enacted reciprocity law.

If deemed applicable, officials are expected to draft proposals for countermeasures, which could include suspending trade privileges and investment benefits.

The move highlights rising trade tensions between Brazil and the United States, two of the hemisphere’s largest economies.
