The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the reactivation of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, diplomats said.
According to sources quoted by Agence France-Presse, the session is scheduled for 10 a.m. (1400 GMT) at the request of France and the United Kingdom.
On Thursday, the European troika—France, Britain, and Germany—announced the activation of the so-called “snapback mechanism,” which allows for the reinstatement of UN sanctions against Tehran, citing Iran’s failure to meet its nuclear commitments.
The European move comes amid escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear activities and stalled diplomatic efforts to revive the nuclear agreement.
