Chile’s far-right candidate Kast wins presidency with 58% of vote

Chile’s far-right presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast won the second round of the country’s election with 58% of the vote, according to official results, as his leftist rival conceded defeat.

With more than 10 million ballots counted, representing about 70% of the total vote, Kast opened a clear lead over Janette Jara, a member of the Communist Party who headed a broad left-wing coalition.

Jara, 51, acknowledged her defeat in a post on social media, saying voters had “spoken loudly and clearly,” and added that she had congratulated the president-elect and wished him success.
