Floods Hit Southwest China as 25 Rivers Exceed Safe Levels

Official Chinese media reported Thursday that water levels in 25 rivers across southwest China have exceeded safety thresholds, prompting the evacuation of over 10,000 residents. The flooding follows heavy monsoonal rains and the remnants of former Typhoon Danas affecting East Asia.

The intense rainfall has inundated wide areas, with meteorologists warning that climate change is intensifying such weather events, overwhelming aging flood protection systems and displacing millions.

Authorities warned of growing challenges, especially to China’s $2.8 trillion agricultural sector, which faces disruption due to unpredictable flooding and extreme weather.

Local governments have deployed rescue teams and reinforced flood barriers as forecasts indicate continued heavy rain in the coming days.
