The International Criminal Court convicted Ali Muhammad Ali Abd al-Rahman, known as “Kushayb,” on 28 counts out of 31 of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur between 2003 and 2004.
The ruling marks the first conviction related to the Darfur conflict, while the fate of ousted president Omar al-Bashir and several aides remains uncertain.
The court found Kushayb responsible for coordinating systematic attacks against civilians in cooperation with government officials.
