Syria Declares Nationwide Ceasefire as Security Forces Deploy in Sweida After Deadly Violence

The Syrian presidency announced on Saturday a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire across the country, in an effort to halt escalating violence and preserve national unity.

In an official statement, the presidency described the decision as a “national and humanitarian responsibility,” calling on all parties to fully comply with the ceasefire and allow state institutions to enforce it in a manner that ensures stability and the protection of civilians. The statement also stressed the importance of facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid without obstruction.

The announcement follows a surge in violence in the southern province of Sweida, where at least 718 people were reportedly killed over the past week. In response, Syrian security forces began deploying across the province on Saturday.

According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, the deployment aims to “protect civilians and restore order” amid rising tensions and violent clashes involving armed groups in the Druze-majority region.

The ceasefire comes amid heightened instability in various parts of Syria, with recent security operations and curfews imposed in Latakia, Homs, and rural Damascus.
