U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the imposition of a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico starting August 1, accusing Mexico of drug trafficking and pointing to a “trade imbalance” with Europe.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned of widespread damage to supply chains, while French President Emmanuel Macron expressed “serious discontent” and called for defending European interests.
