At Least Six Dead, Over a Dozen Missing After Landslide Near Gold Mine in Eastern Indonesia

At least six people have been confirmed dead and more than 14 remain missing after heavy rains triggered a landslide and flash floods near a gold mine in a remote area of West Papua province, eastern Indonesia, authorities said Monday.

Yefri Sabardin, head of the regional rescue agency, told AFP that prolonged torrential rains on Friday evening caused the landslide and flooding, hitting a makeshift mining site in the region.

“According to the latest data, six people have died, and search operations are still underway for 14 others,” Sabardin said, noting the difficult terrain and remote location.

Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency, confirmed that floodwaters swept through a mining camp used by gold workers, washing away their tents and equipment.

He added that four people were treated for injuries at the site, and no major structural or human damage was reported outside the immediate area of the incident.
