U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday the successful completion of a major prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, calling it a positive step that could signal further diplomatic progress.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: “A major prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine has just been completed. Congratulations to both sides on these negotiations. Could this lead to something significant?”
The announcement follows Trump’s earlier statement on Monday, in which he confirmed that Russia and Ukraine would “immediately begin negotiations” aimed at reaching a ceasefire. His comments came after what he described as a “very good” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The prisoner exchange is being viewed as a rare positive development in the conflict, now in its third year, which has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and displaced millions. The move adds momentum to international efforts seeking a comprehensive political resolution.
