Bolivia: Two Right-Wing Candidates Advance to Presidential Runoff

Right-wing senator Rodrigo Paz and former president Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga have advanced to the second round of Bolivia’s presidential election, according to preliminary official results that mark the end of nearly two decades of leftist dominance.

The election takes place amid a severe economic crisis and recurring protests over falling revenues and worsening shortages of basic goods, with Bolivians divided between a desire for change and hopes for stability after 20 years of socialist rule that began under Evo Morales in 2005.
