Syria and Ukraine Restore Diplomatic Ties After Three-Year Break

Syria and Ukraine signed a joint statement on Thursday to restore diplomatic relations, ending a hiatus that has lasted since 2022.

The agreement followed a meeting between Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharrah and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, according to Syria’s official news agency, SANA.

The Syrian side was represented by Foreign Minister Assad Hassan Al-Shaibani, while Ukraine was represented by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.

Zelensky, in a post on the social media platform X, described the move as “significant,” emphasizing Ukraine’s readiness to support the Syrian people on their path toward stability.
