The election campaign for Syria’s People’s Assembly begins Monday morning and will run until Friday evening, ahead of the parliamentary vote scheduled for Sunday, October 5.
The nomination period closed on Sunday across all 50 constituencies in Syria, with a total of 1,578 candidates, including 14% women, though the female candidacy rate varied by governorate, according to the head of the Supreme Electoral Commission, Mohammad Taha Al-Ahmad.
He added that Saturday will be an official election silence day. Polling will begin at 9 a.m. Damascus time (GMT+3) on Sunday and continue until the closing of the ballots, with counting scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
This marks Syria’s first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8 of last year.
