Campaigning Ends in Syria Ahead of Sunday’s Parliamentary Elections

Campaigning for Syria’s upcoming parliamentary elections officially ended on Friday, with Saturday designated as a day of “electoral silence,” according to Nawar Najmeh, spokesperson for the Supreme Election Committee.

Najmeh said the voting process will take place in the presence of local, Arab, and international media observers. Ballot counting will begin immediately after polls close, with results expected to be announced progressively across the country.

He added that the initial list of candidates includes around 6,000 people, all required to be members of electoral bodies — a condition that excludes supporters of the former regime and those accused of “separatism or reliance on foreign powers.”

A total of 140 parliamentary seats are up for election across 60 constituencies nationwide.
