Dozens of world leaders have begun arriving in the Brazilian city of Belém, located in the Amazon region, to participate in the preparatory meetings for the United Nations Climate Summit “COP 30”, amid calls for tangible progress in the fight against climate change, despite growing concerns over weakening international cooperation in this field.
The “COP 30” conference marks three decades since the start of global climate negotiations. During this period, countries have managed to partially reduce the projected rise in emissions, but not enough to prevent the severe global warming that scientists warn could occur in the coming decades.
Over the course of November 6–7, 53 heads of state are expected to deliver speeches at the summit, along with more than 40 regional and local leaders. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres and several other international figures will also be in attendance.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is holding a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, following his meeting on Wednesday with China’s Vice Premier and several European officials.
