Seven Killed in Militant Assault on Peace Committee in Northwest Pakistan

At least seven members of a local peace committee were killed and another wounded on Friday in an armed attack followed by a clash in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border, officials said.

Police officials told Pakistan’s Geo News that gunmen targeted the office of a “peace committee” formed to counter the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A firefight erupted after the assault, they said.

Initial reports indicated that seven committee members were killed and one person injured, according to the officials, who blamed the attack on militants.

State-run Radio Pakistan reported that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, which he said was carried out by the Pakistani Taliban, and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
